Compositional variation in grassland plant communities

چکیده
Human activities are altering ecological communities around the globe. Understanding implications of these changes requires that we consider composition those communities. However, can be summarized by many metrics which in turn influenced different processes. For example, incidence-based strongly reflect species gains or losses, while abundance-based minimally affected abundance small uncommon species. Furthermore, might correlated with predictors. We used a globally distributed experiment to examine variation within 60 grasslands on six continents. Each site had an identical experimental and sampling design: 24 plots × 4 years. expressed compositional each site—not across sites—using abundance- magnitude dissimilarity (Bray–Curtis Sorensen, respectively), measures relative importance replacement (balanced turnover, richness at two scales (per plot-year [alpha] per [gamma]). Average among all plot-years was high similar spatial pretreatment year, but lower years untreated plots. both types metrics, most due rather than nestedness. Differences sites overall within-site were related several Environmental heterogeneity (expressed as CV total aboveground plant biomass unfertilized site) important predictor for metrics. Biomass production turnover alpha diversity not other Continentality (measured annual temperature range) strong Sorensen dissimilarity. Metrics moderately correlated: knowing provides little insight into whether is driven Overall, our understanding enhanced considering multiple simultaneously. Monitoring programs explicitly incorporate implications, when designing strategies analyzing data, will have stronger ability understand systems quantify impacts human activities.

Grassland compost amendments increase plant production without changing plant communities
Compost amendment to grassland is a novel strategy proposed and demonstrated to increase ecosystem carbon (C) storage. However, the effects of compost applications on biomass production and plant diversity are not well known. We assessed impacts of a onetime compost amendment over 4 yr on plant dynamics in two grazed grassland ecosystems in California: a coastal prairie and valley grassland. Th...
متن کاملVariation in dry grassland communities along a heavy metals gradient
The aim of this study was to investigate the variation in plant communities growing on metal-enriched sites created by historical Zn–Pb mining. The study sites were 65 small heaps of waste rock covered by grassland vegetation and scattered mostly over agricultural land of southern Poland. The sites were described in terms of plant coverage, species richness and composition, and the composition ...
متن کاملIntraspecific genetic variation and species coexistence in plant communities.
Many studies report that intraspecific genetic variation in plants can affect community composition and coexistence. However, less is known about which traits are responsible and the mechanisms by which variation in these traits affect the associated community. Focusing on plant-plant interactions, we review empirical studies exemplifying how intraspecific genetic variation in functional traits...
متن کاملChanges in Plant Species Richness Induce Functional Shifts in Soil Nematode Communities in Experimental Grassland
BACKGROUND Changes in plant diversity may induce distinct changes in soil food web structure and accompanying soil feedbacks to plants. However, knowledge of the long-term consequences of plant community simplification for soil animal food webs and functioning is scarce. Nematodes, the most abundant and diverse soil Metazoa, represent the complexity of soil food webs as they comprise all major ...
